GENERAL PURPOSE

  • The Veterinary Assistant carries out assigned duties and is adaptable to changes in the work pattern. As a Veterinary Assistant, your job entails important aspects of our hospital: patient care and treatment, client service, and hospital cleanliness.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Responsible for conducting triages and physical assessments on incoming patients to prioritize their clinical condition to determine their state of stability for immediate vs. non-emergent care
  • Understanding common emergencies and appropriate action steps during the time of the patient’s initial presentation
  • Ability to recognize and facilitate critical patients to getting the care they need in a timely manner if assessed as a critical case during the time of triage; Communicating and obtaining approval for Critical Care forms
  • Responsible for communicating with clients to obtain adequate medical histories on a patient’s health and presenting complaints
  • Provide excellent client service and patient care at all times; maintain constant communication with owners throughout their visit to our hospital;
  • Understanding normal vs abnormal vital sign parameters and alerting appropriate team members to decompensating patients whether hospitalized or outpatient
  • In between triages, assist the licensed technician with outpatient procedures such as, but not limited to, diagnostics, subcutaneous fluid therapy, medication administration
  • Assisting in initial hospitalization of patients and their hourly treatments while following proper hospital protocol regarding documentation of treatment sheets and Practice Management Software
  • Restraining patients for diagnostic testing and physical examinations
  • Completing Client Service Representative training to assist in client service-related tasks such as checking clients in and out, obtaining payments, answering phones, etc.
  • Must adhere to guidance and delegation directed to them by their Licensed Staff (DVMs and LVTs)

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 6-months Kennel work or previous Veterinary Assisting Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Speaking directly with clients and other hospital team members, excellent communication skills is valuable and important
  • Ability to work in a team environment by taking direction and assisting other medical team members
  • Exemplifies a strong work ethic, with a positive attitude
  • Able to multitask and work under pressure
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull above 50lbs and stand for prolonged periods of time

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Driver’s license and reliable transportation including inclement weather conditions
  • 6 months of veterinary experience is preferred (but not necessary)
  • Excellent communication skills (in person and over phones)
  • Strong work ethic and a positive attitude
  • Able to multitask and work under pressure
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations
  • Ability to act as a team player by engaging in teaching and learning from others
  • Maintain a constant level of honesty and integrity
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull above 50lbs and stand for prolonged periods of time

The Veterinary Kennel Attendant position here at Virginia Veterinary Centers is an introductory position into the world of Veterinary Emergency Medicine.  As a Veterinary Kennel Attendant, you will be working alongside other levels of assistants and Licensed Veterinary Technicians to oversee a patient’s well-being and provide exceptional patient care by feeding, walking, changing bedding, administering oral medications when directed, and following appropriate OSHA safety guidelines for PPE. Additionally, the Veterinary Kennel Attendant is responsible for maintaining a clean and orderly workplace by performing important housekeeping duties such as, but not limited to, trash disposal, laundry, disinfecting of high-touch surfaces, vacuuming, mopping, detail cleaning counters and cabinetry, and more.

Applicants must have open schedule availability and be able to work a range of shifts. You must be available for shifts on weekends and holidays.

No previous veterinary experience is required for applicants applying to this position.

Kennel Attendant Requirements: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong organizational and self-sufficient skills

  • Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays with one weekend off a month
  • No minimal experience necessary for this position
  • This is for a part-time position; however, based on a 6-month performance review and open availability, full-time status may become available with an assistant level advancement

Pay Range: $10-$14/hour
